Andrzej Butkiewicz (1955-2008) died on March 7. He will be
remembered as Polish patriot and anticommunist. The Jaruzelski
regime forced Andrzej Butkiewicz and his family to live
in emigration , since 1983.
He started political activity as a student at the University of Gdansk,
expelled from University in 1977, he continued underground work
in the Initiation Committee of Free Workers Union ( Komitet
Zalozycielski Wolnych Zwiazkow Zawodowych). This organization
was the first base for the Solidarity Movement in 1980. Andrzej
Butkewicz was one of the most vigorous and uncompromising
Solidarity’ members. In 1982 Andrzej Butkiewicz was imprisoned in
one cell together with (now) the President Lech Kaczynski.
Lately, he became a strong supporter of screening public and political figures for their connection to former communist regime in Poland and also among Polonia.
After his immigration to the USA, together with his wife, Alina,
they have raised and educated three children.
Andrzej Butkiewicz passed away of a sudden heart attack.
