Mazowsze and WGBH Boston
LETTERS & INFO LIST e

03.09.07
To whom it may concern;

I came across a letter on your website written by Joanne Dzengielewski(*)
in regards to the Mazowsze program being shown on Public Television
nationwide. I am not sure how to specifically reply to Joanne so I am
hoping that you will print this or at least let her know. While it is a
shame that WGBH is not airing the show Joanne might be able to watch it
on WGBY (they aired the program this past week but will air again during
member favorites - check local listings) which is reaches parts of
Boston on channel 57 or on cable digital channel 58. Also, we just found
out very last minute that New Hampshire Public Television which reaches
into Boston on satellite (Dish channel 8781 and Direct TV channel 11)
this Sunday 3/11 2:00pm

Another option is to log on to either of these stations websites and
make a donation and chose the DVD of the program (with bonus footage!)
as your thank you gift. I know that both of these options aren't the exact answer to the
problem, being that WGBH needs to hear that the community wants to see
such shows as this one and other Polish heritage programs. Keep asking
them, eventually they will understand how important these shows are to
the Polish community in Boston.

Thank you,

Abby Koenig

(*) I received this announcement from the Polish Genealogical Society of America (of which I am a member), and was so disappointed that you are not airing this program on WGBH. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time that a program about Polish culture hasn't been offered here. Perhaps, you feel there is not enough interest in the Boston area. But you are wrong, there is a strong Polish community in and around the Boston area and they would be proud to have this aired on Boston Public Television.
My roots in Boston go back to 1882 when my great-grandfather settled in South Boston - yes, I know. South Boston is known primarily for being an Irish community. Unfortunately for us, no one has looked more closely at Boston in the early 1900's and even today to find that there were and are many other nationalities here.
I am sending a copy of this e-mail to the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut/New England, Polish Genealogical Society of America, Szymon Tolak (who founded the website http://www.polboston.com), and to the Polish American Congress of Eastern, MA (http://www.paceasternmass.org/) and Andrzej Pronczuk of the Polish Cultural Foundation in Boston (http://www.pcf-boston.org) for their information. In addition, I hope you will check out some of these websites, especially the Polish Cultural Foundation (which brings Polish cultural and artistic events to Boston) and Polboston (a website for Poles and Polish-Americans to keep us up to date on events and news in the Polish community.
Perhaps, if it is too late to change scheduling for March, you will consider adding it to your scheduling in April or May. May 3 is a well-celebrated day in the Polish community because it marks the anniversary of Poland's Constitution in 1791 (which used our U.S. Constitution in part as its model). There is to be a state celebration on May 3 at the Massachusetts State House in Boston at 10 AM.
Speaking for myself, and I'm sure for the Polish and Polish-American community in and proximity to Boston, I hope you will reconsider this and future programs about Polish life, culture, history, etc. and air them on WGBH right here in Boston.
We are proud of our heritage and would like to share it with others as well.
Thank you for your consideration.

Mazowsze (web s.) World Premier on Public Television
THE MUSIC & DANCE OF POLAND : MAZOWSZE is a thrilling kaleidoscopic display of dazzling movement, vibrant color and stunning beauty. The incomparable Mazowsze (Mah-ZOV-sheh) performance troupe whirl and leap, stamp and glide in a glorious outpouring of sound and motion, rhythm and music that celebrates the cultural legacy of Poland . Polish-American entertainer Bobby Vinton narrates.

While the choreography and musical arrangements represent 39 distinctive ethnographic regions of Poland with traditional performance styles, the appeal of Mazowsze's dynamic stage show goes beyond audiences of Polish descent. An ensemble of 65 dancers and singers are arrayed in a seemingly never-ending series of handmade traditional costumes -- more than 1,000 in total, one more dramatic and colorful than the next and some weighing as much as 30 lbs., making their energetic gravity-defying leaps, twirls and lifts even more impressive. A full 23-member orchestra performs music ranging from Chopin to simple folk melodies beloved by the Poles for centuries. Strategically mounted high definition cameras and microphones capture this stellar performance, recorded live at the Polish National Opera House in Warsaw , Poland .

Mazowsze is internationally recognized as Poland's cultural ambassadors. In the last 50 years they have performed more than 6,000 shows in cities around the world. The troupe's founders, singer/actress Mira Ziminska and conductor/composer Tadeusz Sygietynski, dedicated themselves to preserve the rich music and dance traditions of Poland after the devastation of World War II.
