Szych Blasts Kerry for "Joke"
November 1, 2006
William H. "Billy" Szych, Iraqi war veteran and candidate for the 1st Congressional District of Massachusetts, says that John Kerry's remark about the abilities of our military personnel is deeply offensive to him.
"Kerry's implication - unintended or not - that people in the service are not smart is highly insulting and could not be further from the truth," says Szych.
Szych's comments came after Kerry, during a speech in California , said, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq ."
"I have seen these men and women in action, and I believe that they are outstanding examples of the best in America . They are truly our next 'greatest generation', and have achieved amazing results under the most difficult conditions," continued Szych. "I have great faith that our country will benefit from these outstanding leaders in the years to come."
During his campaign, Szych has advocated that all political leaders use more care when talking publicly about the war in Iraq , and should always consider the impact words can have on the morale of the troops.
"I know that Kerry said he was making a joke which went wrong. But to me, the words 'Iraq' and 'joke' should never be used together. Our military members are serving honorably in Iraq . For Kerry to reduce Iraq to a joke in front of students whose peers are doing the fighting really offends me. I think an immediate apology is owed to our troops and to all those who have served."
